Zephyr - Munich

Munich is a city best known for beer halls, lederhosen, and liter-sized steins, but tucked away in the Glockenbachviertel is a bar that flips that stereotype on its head. Zephyr is small, understated, and unpretentious, yet it’s also one of the most inventive cocktail bars in the city. Walk past the modest façade and step inside, and you immediately feel like you’ve crossed into a different world. There’s no Bavarian kitsch, just a cozy, low-lit room humming with quiet energy, the kind of place that lets the drinks do the talking.

The interior is intimate without being cramped. A handful of tables, a small bar, and warm lighting create an atmosphere that feels equal parts laid-back and precise. It’s the kind of space where you can relax into conversation, yet you’re always aware that something special is happening behind the bar. The bartenders work with an easy confidence, moving quickly but never hurried, crafting drinks with the sort of focus that makes you lean forward, curious about what will end up in your glass.

The martini at Zephyr wasn’t a stripped-down dry classic, but something far more intriguing. Made with gin, sake, and sweet vermouth, the drink had a softness and layered complexity that felt both unexpected and perfectly balanced. The gin provided its sharp, botanical backbone, but the sake added a clean, subtle umami note, while the sweet vermouth brought roundness and depth. It wasn’t a martini that shouted but one that unfolded, sip by sip, into something elegant and quietly memorable.

The presentation sealed it. The martini itself arrived perfectly chilled, clear and inviting, while on the side was a small glass dish holding a trio of garnishes: a lemon twist, plump olives, and a pickled pearl onion. It was like being handed options, a choice of how you wanted to shape the drink in the moment: brightness from the citrus, brine from the olive, or the sharp, savory bite of the onion. It was thoughtful without being fussy, a reminder that details matter as much as the pour.

Of course, curiosity got the better of me. I began with the lemon twist, dropping it into the glass and watching the oils spread across the surface, bringing a fresh citrus lift to the first few sips. Halfway through, I added the olive, its briny weight grounding the drink with a savory note that seemed to anchor the gin and sake together. By the time I tried the pickled onion, the martini had shifted again. Suddenly sharper, more daring, a flash of Gibson-style attitude tucked inside an otherwise elegant drink. It felt less like three separate garnishes and more like three acts of the same performance.

The crowd at Zephyr mirrored the bar’s approach. Eclectic, curious, and quietly appreciative. Students, creatives, young professionals, and the occasional cocktail pilgrim filled the room, leaning over their glasses in hushed but animated conversations. There was no sense of pretension, no feeling that anyone was there for show. Everyone seemed united by a simple, shared respect for what was in front of them: drinks made with care and a touch of imagination.

By the time my martini was finished, it was clear that Zephyr’s strength lies in its ability to play with tradition while still honoring it. In a city where beer culture so often dominates, Zephyr proves that Munich can also deliver world-class cocktails in a setting that feels intimate and alive.
